What is GiveInKind?

1. What is GiveInKind?
    GiveInKind is a charity initiative where money for charity is raised through non-material and Intellectual property donations from our donors. We use Blogs and YouTube videos as a vehicle to raise money and awareness.

2. What is a Blog?
   A blog is a stands for WebLog, which is an online shared journal. A blog can be personal or any topic of interest. Common Blogs are Travel Blogs, Cooking and other interests, how to Blogs or any topic of interest. The intent of the Blog is to share information on the web. A user looking for a recipe on the Internet could find it in a blog. Blog generally has one author, but Blogs with many authors are common as well like in a community journal.

3. What is online advertising?
   Just like TV and Newspaper, Web is an advertising media. People are on the web searching for something and a seller can reach a buyer based on what the buyer is searching for. This is active marketing. Sellers can also position their brand by displaying a logo or brand name to the users. YouTube is overtaking web blogs a content creation and distribution platform.

4. How does a Blog make money?
    If I have a recipe blog with a listing of Vegetarian recipes, the person who comes to the blog might be interested in Vegetarian restaurants, low fat diet, Kellogg's Special K or slim fast. The Blog can display an advertisement  make money for selling the 'spot' on my website.

5. How much money can a Blog make?
   Typically it is $1 for every 1000 impressions. Am impression is the number of times the blog displays an ad to a unique visitor in a day. If 1000 people came to site and saw an ad, the blog makes $1. Their return visit in a day do not count, however they can come the following day and the Blog will make money.

6. Can you really raise a lot of money to help poor children?
   If you tell about this site to 10 individuals and they did the same and this continued 6 levels deep that's 10 million visitors. If they came to the site once a week that generates $4000. We can educate a whole village, feed many many kids and save many many lives.

7. Why would anyone come to the same Blog again and again?
    No they wont unless the content changes and they have something new every time they visit. That is why we need volunteers to contribute to the blog to keep it fresh and interesting. Above all , we want our readers to find some value, a nice recipe, a nice hotel for vacation or something to read to a first grader.

Volunteer for Free in India

There are plenty of opportunities to do some good around the world without spending a ton of money. As a person of Indian origin, in an effort to give back to the country of my birth, I started researching volunteering in India only to find out that there were fees and often in the thousands of dollars. Most of the beneficiaries of such volunteer programs  are already reasonably well equipped and have the visibility to attract international volunteers. There are several orphanages, old-age homes and schools for the blind that don't even know that there are volunteers around the world willing to help them. Email  giveinkind@googlegroups.com for volunteering information that would mean something to you and the beneficiaries. There are no fees and the services (accommodation and food) is provided by volunteers themselves.

One day I looked at my Google Adsense accoint that has 10cents in it after 6 months which was pretty useless to me, but if I could pool 100 of them, it would educate and feed a child for a month in India or Africa. MicroFinance and Social change

While the jury is out on if free markets are rational, one can be certain that in developing countries free markets, if it existed, are not only irrational, but also very prejudiced.

For those of you who have seen women selling vegetables in a bamboo basket, you know the difficult life vendors lead in developing countries. They are skilled traders and work very hard, but they could never escape the poverty. Let’s look at a case-study of a vegetable vendor. Typically they buy produce at 3am and sell it on the streets by 10am. The capital is Rs.300 and the sale on a good day is Rs.500. That is a profit of Rs.200 which is about Rs.6000 or $120 in monthly income, but only if the vendor had 30 good days in a row. There are bad days during monsoon when it is hard to sell vegetables on the street, there are days when the vendor is sick or there is a riot or a strike. Rs.6000 is barely enough to maintain a family of 4 and there is always debt piled up from a sickness or an injury. It is really hard to access capital with a good business case, and for a vendor with debt already piled up and a high risk business selling perishable good with little infrastructure, the odds are stacked up high against them. That’s where the infamous daily lenders come in. Dubbed 'kandhu vaddi' the lenders target the poor and the destitute and lend them as little as Rs300 in the morning and collect Rs.360 at the end of the day. For the poor fruit vendor or the samosa vendor the day starts with borrowing from the kandhu lender. For the vendor, its not really bad. The poor cannot go to a bank and borrow money for business and their only source of capital is on the streets. Even after paying a whopping 10% interest on a day, they walk away with a profit which can put food on the table. The problem is when the vendor has a bad day or is unable to make a profit, the unscrupulous lenders often harass the borrowers and try to recoup the money in ways that can neither be described as legal nor ethical. The interest owed is added to the capital and that accrues interest on a daily basis and the hole gets deeper and deeper.

What microfinance does is to lend money to the ingenious vendors and business people in poor countries and give them a chance at success. Muhammad Ynuis bagged the Nobel peace price for his work in microcredit through Grameen Bank. Microfinance is an established industry in several developing countries, however because of their for-profit business model, the institutions really ignore the needy with no assets. The costs of operations is high, it takes a person on the ground to verify the validity of an applicant and his business to be able to grant a loan. The labour for the business case validation often is as much as the loan requested. Microcredit is best done by social entrepreneur, where the goal should be social change and not profits.

I was so releived to see this, partly because I dont have to register a domain, build an application, get yelled at by my wife for spending hours in front of the computer. A few years ago I saw a programme on CBC about trafficking in Cambodia, children as young as 5 year old, beaten and tortured. Here is a link to their site and a video. CAUTION: The video is very disturbing.

Free rice - Power in number

I came across a site called freerice.com, where you play a game and for every correct answer 10 grains of rice is donated to the World Food Programme. Pretty cool concept and in perfect allignment with mine, give in kind and not in currency. Play this game, i like the vocabilary and the geographic find the country game. Its pretty addictive.
